Starting Procedure
- Battery System (Remote On/Off): Use the remote key fob. Press ON once to energize the electrical system.
- Enabled Light: A small indicator light above the key switch will illuminate when the system is active. The light turns off automatically once the engine is running or when the battery is disabled. The remote cannot turn off the system while the engine is running (safety lockout).
- Anti-Theft (Key Fob): The key fob includes an anti-theft immobilizer — the Sniper/ignition system will not permit starting if the vehicle is locked/disabled by the fob. The remote provides simple On/Off buttons.
- Fuel Injection Prime: Turn the ignition key to the ON position for about 3 seconds before cranking. This allows the Holley Sniper EFI to prime the fuel system.
- Sniper Self-Tuning: As you drive, the Holley Sniper system continuously self-tunes, adjusting fuel delivery to match real-world conditions and improve drivability and performance over time.
- Start the Engine: Turn the key to START until the engine fires, then release. The EFI will control cold start, warm-up, and idle automatically.
- Fuel: Ethanol is supported, although ethanol-free premium is recommended for longest shelf/storage life. Up to E85 (lower fuel mileage) can be used by manually adjusting Holley tuning.
Driving Operation
- Transmission: Standard VW 4-speed H-pattern. Reverse is accessed per the installed shifter’s pattern (lift T handle, left/back).
- Power Tilt Column: A small momentary button on the lower dash to the right of the steering column raises or lowers the column for comfort and ease of entry/exit.
- Clutch: Manual cable-operated clutch with a light, short engagement. Avoid riding the pedal.
- Brakes: Manual brakes with front discs and rear drums. A firm pedal feel is normal; leave a generous stopping distance in a lightweight buggy.
- Steering: Electric power-assist steering. Light effort at low speeds with a more natural, weighted feel as speed increases.
- Battery Remote (Parking): When parked, especially for extended periods, press OFF on the remote to disconnect the battery and prevent parasitic draw.
- Battery Protection: If key is on for an extended period without starting, battery saver engages and turns off the system, re-enable with key fob.
Lighting & Indicators
- Headlights: Controlled by the main light switch; a floor-mounted dimmer pedal toggles between high and low beam.
- Turn Signals: VW-style column switch; self-canceling as equipped.
- Dash Warning Lights:
- Oil: Should go out immediately after start. If it stays on, shut down and investigate.
- GEN/ALT: Should go out once the charging system is active.
- High Beam: Illuminates when high beams are selected.
- Horn: Activated by the center button on the steering wheel.
Routine Maintenance (Quick Reference)
- Valve Lash: .004" (engine warm)
- Spark Plug Gap: .035".
- Oil Change: Every 1,500 miles or 6 months with quality oil suitable for flat-tappet air-cooled engines.
- Tire Pressure: Approx. 18 psi front, 22 psi rear, tune to feel and load.
- Battery: YTX14-BS 12V LIFEPO4 Lithium, No maintenance required, keep maintainer connected when stored.
- EFI & Electrical: Periodically check for vacuum leaks, solid grounds, clean power connections, and proper sensor routing.
Storage & Battery Care
- Battery Tender Connection: A quick-connect lead near the alternator area for use of the included smart battery tender.(tucked behind rear panel above Alt).
- Battery Isolation: Always press OFF on the remote when the vehicle is stored to eliminate draw and add a layer of theft deterrence.
- Fuel Storage: Drain the fuel tank and lines or add a fuel stabilizer. Non-ethanol fuels store longest.
- Reactivation: Disconnect tender, press ON on the remote, confirm enabled light, turn key to ON for ~3 seconds to prime the Sniper, then start as normal.
